Arkansas Auto Insurance Quotes and
Coverage Guide
Arkansas Motor Vehicle Insurance
Questions & Answers
Q: Is auto insurance
mandatory?
A: Yes. All owners of motor
vehicles registered in Arkansas must
maintain liability insurance as
required by law. They won’t shoot
you if
you don’t, but you may want to shoot
yourself (or at least kick yourself
in the you-know-where) after you pay
the fine for not having it. And
being Bill Clinton’s sister’s
ex-husband’s cousin won’t help,
either.
Q: Is Arkansas a "No-Fault"
State?
A: Yes, Arkansas is a
no-fault state. Even if the accident
was really
your fault, your insurance company
will pay for any medical bills or
property damage you do so the
banged-up person can get some
medical
treatment other than from his
cousin’s wife’s brother’s uncle (not
related to Bill Clinton) who
practices voodoo in his basement.
Q: What type of insurance is
required to purchase and maintain an
Arkansas tag and registration?
A: Proof of liability at
25/50/25 minimums (that’s up to
$25,000 per
person, up to $50,000 for two or
more people, and up to $25,000 for
property damage) will get your car
registered and license plated, and
no
matter what you’ve heard, claiming
to know Bill Clinton personally
won’t
get ‘em for you without that
insurance.
Q: Can I maintain my current
policy issued in my previous state
of
residence?
A: No. But you do have 30
days to get all that changed to a
licensed
insurance carrier in Arkansas, so
you can live well and prosper – and
not get a ticket for invalid
insurance. Give your agent a call.
He/she
will help you out on this if you ask
nicely (or even if you don’t.)
Q: What if I fail to keep
insurance on my vehicle that I’ve
registered
in Arkansas?
A: Even if you really do know
Bill Clinton, that won’t help you
now. He
(and maybe even your own mother)
won’t admit knowing YOU. Here’s what
you’re looking at now:
First offense: a mandatory fine of
not less than fifty dollars ($50.00)
nor more than two hundred fifty
dollars ($250).
Second offense: a fine not less than
two hundred fifty dollars ($250)
nor more than five hundred dollars
($500) for the second offense, and
the minimum fine shall be mandatory.
Third (or any subsequent) offense: a
fine not less than five hundred
dollars ($500) nor more than one
thousand dollars ($1,000) or
sentenced
to one (1) year in jail or both.
Q: I am not a resident of
Arkansas, but I visit for several
months
during the year. Do I need Arkansas
insurance?
A: If those visits are longer
that 30 days, it’s pretty safe to
say you
will need to get Arkansas insurance.
If this is the case, you are there
long enough to establish residency
and may need to go ahead and do just
that. Contact your agent to confirm
your current coverage or go ahead
and stick your neck out, hope you
don’t get in an accident, and if you
do, don’t expect Bill Clinton to
help you, whether or not you know or
are related to him.
Q: I own several vehicles but do
not operate some of them. Do I need
insurance for the inoperative ones?
A: If you have the vehicles
registered, you’re going to have to
insure
them. Plain and simple. If you
choose not to operate them, then,
hey,
that’s your problem.
Q: How can I own a vehicle and
not need insurance?
A: The only way you can do
this is to be in jail – which is
where you
will eventually wind up if you don’t
get insurance on your vehicle(s).
